At a glance
Portugal has been a member of the euro area since 1 January 1999. Euro banknotes and coins were introduced on 1 January 2002. Until that date the euro was the official currency but only existed as 'book money'. The euro replaced the Portuguese escudo (PTE) at a conversion rate of EUR 1 = PTE 200.482.
Portugal is represented by Pedro Passos Coelho, Prime Minister, at Euro Summit meetings and by its Minister for Finance, Vítor Gaspar, at Eurogroup meetings.

Government
The Portuguese Republic comprises 18 districts and two autonomous regions (Madeira and the Azores).
It has a unicameral parliamentary system.
The Assembly of the Republic (Assembleia da República) is composed of 230 members, elected for four years.
The President of the Republic is the head of state and is elected by direct universal suffrage, for five years. He/she appoints the Prime Minister and assumes a mediation role.
